Jazz rocker (SFWeekly) singer/songwriter/instrumentalist, Ben Graves, represents an eclectic history of musical experience; in high school in rural Tennessee he was a neo-folk/classical guitarist, a jazz saxophonist, and the lead singer in a band that would become the platinum-selling hard rock outfit Fuel. From 1996 to 2003, he honed his craft, recording 2 original Cds and performing his original music in many of the Bay Area’s hippest venues: the Fillmore, Great American Music Hall, Cafe du Nord, the Hotel Utah, Freight and Salvage, Sweetwater, and many others. In 2003, he moved to Nashville, where he worked as a sideman with country artists Rebecca Lynn Howard, James Otto, Amy Dalley, and others. He spent most of 2005 doing administrative work for the New York Philharmonic in Manhattan and taking part in the New York scene before returning to Nashville, where he remains active as a session musician, performing songwriter, sideman, and educator. For nearly two decades, the Lipscomb Community Chorus has offered an opportunity for individuals who enjoy singing to work on new music and to be a part of a chorus. The Lipscomb Community Chorus will begin its 20th season on Jan. 2 with its first rehearsal. The chorus is an a capella ensemble, and anyone who is interested in being part of this group is invited to participate. Auditions are not required. The chorus is led by Robert King, director of fine arts and of the high school choirs at Lipscomb Academy. “The singing of a capella sacred music by choruses has long been an important part of the Lipscomb community,” said King. “Individuals who love to sing have always found here a place to share that talent with each other in choral ensembles. That is why LUCC was formed in 1997. Those who always wanted to sing in a chorus can join with those who have done so before and want to continue that love for choral music.” King came to Lipscomb in 1984. His wife, Donna, is a faculty member in the Lipscomb University School of Music. He is also one of the worship leaders for the Harpeth Hills Church of Christ and serves as director of the Nashville Youth Choir, part of the Belmont University School of Music Academy program. “Because the members of LUCC are not enrolling in a school class there are not the same rigid rehearsal attendance requirements. The expectation is that members attend as frequently as their family and work or school responsibilities allow,” said King. “Every member is important to the group. There is no membership fee, but of course you are welcome to make a tax deductible donation to the choral program!” For more information visit lipscombcommunitychorus.org or email info@lipscombcommunitychorus.org or robert.king@lipscomb.edu. Cloud Cult developed in 1995 as a solo studio project of Craig Minowa. His first full length album, "The Shade Project" caught the interest of a few small independent labels who urged Minowa to consider performing the songs live. Craig worked the next four years on a new studio project which would be the first official Cloud Cult album, "Who Killed Puck?". In 1999, lead singer Craig and Connie Minowa formed Earthology, a not-for-profit environmental organization that would later gain its nonprofit 501c3 status. Craig worked on developing the Earthology Records branch, which was focused on helping to green the music industry. Earthology Records would become the homegrown powerhouse where all of the band's booking, publicity, CD replication, t-shirt production, and recording would take place. Through Earthology, Minowa developed the first 100% postconsumer recycled CD packaging in the U.S. market. Earthology Records was later moved to an organic farm, powered by geothermal energy and built partially from reclaimed wood and recycled plastic. The band began zero net greenhouse gas practices for tours long before it was trendy to be green. The band's merchandise is 100% postconsumer recycled or made of certified organic materials. Cloud Cult has planted several thousand trees to absorb the band's CO2 output. They also donate heavily to projects that build wind turbines as revenue generators on Native American Reservations. Mike Henderson. Talented singer, songwriter (If The Jukebox Took Teardrops, Harder Cards), multi instrumentalist and multi band member. Is there anything he can’t do? It would seem, based on the aforementioned evidence, that the answer to that question is simply “no.” Plus, he obviously fronts the Mike Henderson Band (hence the name) and they play some of the best blues this side of the Mississippi. He is joined by bassist, Michael Rhodes, and pianist/keyboardist, Kevin McKendree. Source: Submitted [less-]
