Agnes Eggling has a great apartment - and Berlin in the early 1930s is a place of thrilling extremes. Her friends, a group of fiercely intelligent left-wing activists and artists, are drawn to this apartment as Agnes is entertained, intrigued and intimidated by their radical politics. As Germany's Weimar Republic is seduced by Nazism, ideals begin to disintegrate, friendships dissolve and a country stands on the brink of war just outside Agnes' apartment window. By turns both magical and rhetorical, A Bright Room Called Day is filled with Tony Kushner's trademark fire and wit balanced with metaphysical touches. Very real characters are surrounded by extraordinary circumstances with huge consequences illustrating what happens when intelligent people sit by idly during times of crisis.
