In collaboration with John Holleman & Company, the Parthenon will present Sophocles' Antigone at the feet of Athena. The children of Oedipus continue to live out the curse on their father's house. His sons die fighting each other for the throne of Thebes and their uncle Creon, defacto ruler of the city, decrees that Polyneices, the attacking brother, shall remain unburied. Antigone, Oedipus' daughter, brings death on herself by defying his edict. This ancient tragedy focuses on the struggle of the individual (conscience) against the state (authority) and asks the audience to consider the relative importance of such universal and timeless ideas as love, law, familial obligation, divine edicts, security, morality, duty and individual vs. community needs and interests. John Holleman & Company specializes in masked theatre and has previously produced Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses (2006) and Medea (2005) for the Parthenon. Greek drama arose out of religious festivals and ritual, and Holleman lets that tradition inform the style of this production. Cast members include John Devine, Mary McCallum, Wesley Paine, Alicia Ridley, Tamiko Robinson and Stephanie Vickers.
