On Sunday, January 20, the Nashville Ballet's Martin Center will host a reception for new works by artist Emily Harper. Although Harper has collaborated with numerous artists, musicians, and venues throughout Nashville, she hopes this particular collaboration will draw attention to the new exhibition space at the ballet. Organized by the ballet's curator, Linda Coulter, Harper's works will be on view in the Frist Gallery through March 20, 2008. The exhibition, Thus is Life, will be Harper's first solo display of batiks. Harper's batiks are delicate reflections of her life and the support around her. This exhibition focuses on the choices we make that push each of us in a greater direction. Works from this series range from the birth of a dear friend's child to the decision to move far away from the familiar into the unknown. In Evolution of the Human Spirit, Harper captures the power of freeing one's inner spirit using the silhouette of a young man as he turns his back on the past to face the mountains before him.
