The Nashville Jazz Workshop and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts announce the return of last year's popular jazz performance and education series, Jazz on the Move. The first of four Sunday afternoon programs is Sunday, January 13, 3:00pm, in the Frist Center Auditorium. The topic is Brazilian Jazz, presented by Lori Mechem & Ritmos Picantes. All performances in this series are free and open to the public. Lori Mechem & Ritmos Picantes were formed 17 years ago by a group of Nashville session players with a love of Brazilian music. The group includes Nashville Jazz Workshop Directors Lori Mechem & Roger Spencer, and also includes Dann Sherrill, Denis Solee, Chris Brown, & Mario DaSilva. Also on hand will be special guests Jeff Hall and members of Samba Nove, the Nashville Jazz Workshop's Brazilian Ensemble. Ritmos Picantes will demonstrate the different instruments used in Brazilian music and the styles played, such as Samba, Bossa Nova, and folkloric styles. Rarely does the public have the chance to hear jazz artists explain their music and the different styles of jazz. The Jazz on the Move series is designed to take jazz out of the club or concert hall setting and into the community. Jazz fans and novices alike will have the chance to learn more about this great music. The Jazz on the Move series is made possible through a $5,000 grant to the Nashville Jazz Workshop from the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
