    Lou Reed has been an influential American singer-songwriter and guitarist for over 40 years. He first came to prominence with The Velvet Underground (1965-1973) in New York City. The band gained little mainstream attention during their career, but in hindsight became one of the most influential of their era. As a guitarist, Reed was a pioneer in the use of distortion, high volume feedback, and nonstandard tunings. Reed began a long and eclectic solo career in 1971. He had a hit the following year with "Walk on the Wild Side," though for more than a decade he seemed to willfully evade the mainstream commercial success its chart status offered him. Most recently, in 2007 Reed released Hudson River Wind Meditations, his first record of ambient meditation music said to have been composed just for himself as a guidance for Tai Chi exercise and meditation.
