In 1945, James McCollum was placed at a detention desk when he chose not to participate in his 5th grade class' Christian Bible Study. His mother filed suit in the Circuit Court of Champaign County, Illinois and the case eventually made its way to the US Supreme Court, where it became a landmark case in constitutional law on the separation of Church and State. Please join Dr. James McCollum and members of the Vanderbilt project on Religion and Politics for a discussion of this historic decision and the state of the establishment of religion clause of the 1st Amendment 60 years later.
