Add Review/CommentBased on Bruce Chatwin's 1980 novel The Viceroy of Ouidah, this adventure drama stars Kinski as a plantation overseer in 19th-century Brazil who, after falling out of favor with his boss, is sent to West Africa on a dangerous slave-buying mission that soon has him fighting for his life. Without moralizing on the notorious profession, the last of Herzog and Kinski’s collaborations is an absurdist adventure in a strange land, a take on the politics of the both the savage and civilized through the documentary-like eye of its maker. Ghana/Germany, 111 min.
