Rage, trust, betrayal, destruction; truth really is stranger than fiction in Werner Herzog’s post-mortem remembrance of his nemesis/friend Klaus Kinski. Opening with must-see footage of Kinski’s famed Jesus Tour of the early 70’s wherein Kinski is seen enraged by a heckling audience, we see both Herzog and Kinski in the highs and lows of their collaboration complete with Kinski’s rants documented by still-filming cameras and punctuated by Herzog’s remembrances of various unbelievable episodes, including a plan to firebomb Kinski in his home. What emerges is a portrait of two artists pushing each other incessantly to reach the sublime. Germany, 100 min.
