Big Band Dances in Centennial Park featuring the Paul Ross Orchestra
Metro Parks Cultural Arts Department
July 12, 2008
Come celebrate Metro Parks' 25th annual summer of Big Band Dances! The event premiered with the opening of Riverfront Park in 1983, and over the years the popular dances have moved to Centennial Park. This year the free dances will be held every Saturday from June 7 through September 6, 2008 at the Event Shelter in Centennial Park. To help celebrate our anniversary, we will hold weekly amateur swing dance contests. The weekly winners will compete for the “King and Queen of Nashville Swing 2008” crowns on September 6. There will also be free ballroom dance lessons sponsored by Dance World 7:00pm - 7:30pm and 8:30pm - 8:40pm.
The live music begins at 7:30pm and continues until 10:00pm featuring the Paul Ross Orchestra on July 12. The Centennial Café will have food and beverages for sale. People of all ages are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs or quilts to sit on the lawn. Parking is available along Park Plaza and in the Park. Presented by Metro Parks, the dances are sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission, WAMB, The Musicians’ Trust Fund and Arts in the Parks.

I went to Centennial Park last year to check out the Big Band Dances. They are really fun! It's more fun if you bring a date to dance with, but if not, you're bound to meet someone to dance with. I would go every single Saturday, but my husband doesn't get off work until after 9:00. I only wish they would switch up the days. Maybe Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. It's really fun, though. Live swing band, huge dance floor, free lessons. Free admission! Parking wasn't too bad either when I went. Give it a try! Collapse

I love going to the weekly Swing dances in Nashville! It is a great way to spend an evening and an even better way to touch up on your Swinging skills. Even if you are not an avid Swing dancer, you'll be sure to enjoy watching others and listening to some of Music City's finest musicians. And best of all, it's free! Don't miss another Saturday.
