Waves on Waves, Tyler & Kyle, Tristan and Cassino
The Mercy Lounge and Cannery Ballroom
June 18, 2008
Waves on Waves, Nashville's Tyler & Kyle, Tristan and Cassino at the Mercy Lounge.
For a nearly decade, Waves on Waves has followed the creative footsteps of art rock visionaries without coming off retro or reeking of derivation. With a front man who sounds like a blend of Elvis Presley and Kate Bush, Bassist Luke Aaron Jones and Drummer Enoch Porch add lush harmonies with an underbelly of vintage synths and four-on-the-floor rhythm. The band's self-titled debut release is set to come out in June.
Chesapeake, Virginia native Tyler Cain and Los Angeles native Kyle Whalum share similar, yet distinct, stories. Both have been playing music for most of their lives. Both attended high schools for the performing arts. Both attended Belmont University, where they first forged their musical partnership. And both have worked with some of the most respected musicians in Music City and beyond. But the unique sound of Tyler & Kyle lies in their diverse musical backgrounds. While both are skilled across virtually all genres, Tyler's background has more country and rock influences, which melt into Kyle's roots in soul, funk, and metal to form a sound that truly cannot be crammed into any particular stylistic box. And it is the duo's dichotomy of musical diversity that has helped Tyler & Kyle craft tunes that have turned the Nashville independent music scene on its collective ear.

I was pretty bummed when I heard the show was being moved to The Cannery Ballroom. I was looking forward to seeing them at The Mercy Lounge, but it ended up being a blast! They sounded super tight and of course the crowd went nuts for Steady as She Goes. Level was another highlight. The opening band Magic Wands were really good, a lot of people seemed to dig them. Overall a great night! Collapse
