Chock-full of newly discovered footage of the prophetic “free-jazz” saxophonist Albert Ayler and his band and narrated via an archived interview by the man himself, My Name Is Albert Ayler charts the arc of his all-too-brief career from his native Cleveland through his military band youth to his first recording in Sweden in 1962 to New York, where he was found dead in New York’s East River at the tender age of 34. Abandoning critical commentary and third-person narration, director Kaspar Collin keeps interview subjects limited to former associates (such as drummer Sonny Murray and bassist Gary Peacock) and family members including his father and brother Don, once Albert’s bandmate. Evidenced by recording interviewees listening and reacting to Ayler’s music, their reactions can move from grimace to elation mirroring not only the power of the music, but the path of the music to public acceptance. As Ayler himself stated: “If people don’t like it now, they will.” Dir. Kaspar Collin, Sweden, 2006, 79m, digital.
