The Nashville Country Dancers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to dancing the traditional dances of the United States (Appalachian squares and circles, New England contras and couple dances) and couple dances like waltzes. Like so many things American, our folk dances are indeed the result of other national dances stirred together in the melting pot of traditions. Contra dancing is a mix of long ways dances from England and Scotland and square dances from France. Volunteer run,the group sponsors weekly Contra dances and two weekend long events each year. All dances are taught and accompanied by live music. These dances are accessible to people of all ages and ideally suited for bringing the community together. No partner is required.

What could be better than being told the basics of what to do and how to do it at a dance?! At least for someone like me, who enjoys dancing but feels awkward left to free choice, lol. Each basic element of a dance is run through prior to, and called throughout the number, so combined with the lesson at 7:30, it was simple enough but still enthusiastic and interesting. If you go, wear soft-soled, non-marking shoes, required to protect the hardwood floor at the church (we got lucky, they had to have it in another room this evening w/o a hardwood floor.) There is a lot of "going 'round" involved, so if you're compromised physically, be careful, it's easy to get dizzy. Other than that, anyone could easily participate. My husband said he'd had the best time he's ever had at partner dancing-I could tell. Great fun! Collapse
