My Brother’s Wedding presented by: Frank Dobson, Director, Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center (1985) United States. Director: Charles Burnett. Not rated. Pierce Mundy has only 24 hours to make a consequential decision: should he cast his lot with the downtrodden African-American community of Watts and go to his best friend’s funeral or should he aspire for better things and attend his brother’s wedding? In English. 81 minutes. The recently-restored, director’s-cut version of independent filmmaker Charles Burnett’s classic. Digibeta. Financial support provided by Mimi and Scott Manzler.

International Lens, a film series with a global perspective, uses film screenings as a forum to promote conversation among Vanderbilt’s diverse community of students, faculty and staff. International Lens strives to transcend geographic, ethnic, religious, linguistic and political boundaries by facilitating conversation and greater cross-cultural understanding through cinema. The series is a partnership between the Office of the Dean of Students and academic departments, centers and programs.

Why no REAL Cajun Music....can't have a Cajun Festival without the REAL DEAL. After Katrina there a lots of Louisiana transplants living here now so how about some CAJUN & ZYDECO music next year? Then the entire Cajun dance club here, Huntsville & Brimingham will come and it will grow too. How about it? I will be glad to help as I am a Cajun Dancer and former Pres of the Cajun Dance club. I loved this film. The fact that there was no music, the gritty, realistic images, the raw idea of what Bruno had done, I was on the edge of my emotional seat throughout. I really liked the facilitator, too, although I wish she had been a bit more organized in her questions (hence the 1/2 star deduction). It helped a bit that she was from the country of the film's origin, but I would've liked to have heard more about how the film received its Palme d'Or awards. A bit more background on the actors themselves might have added some intrigue to the event. Overall, though, I really enjoyed the experience, and it was over way too soon. I'd definitely recommend the film for its candor and realism, and I'll look forward to another experience in this venue very soon. They should do more of these (especially free). Collapse
