Tonight's feature is The Champagne Spy, Israel/Germany, 2007, in English, French, Hebrew and German with English subtitles, Director/Screenwriter: Nadav Schirman. Winner, Israeli Film Academy, Best Documentary Award, 2007; Winner, John Schlesinger Prize for Outstanding First Feature, 2008 Palm Springs International Film Festival.

If you feel documentaries are at their best when the facts are stranger than fiction, or if you like stories of international intrigue, imagined or real, The Champagne Spy is a must. Major Ze'ev Gur Arie was an Israeli officer drafted by the Mossad (the national intelligence agency of Israel) in 1960 to penetrate the circle of German scientists developing weapons of mass destruction in Egypt. After training in espionage and sabotage and building his covert identity, Gur Arie left for Cairo as Wolfgang Lotz, ex-Nazi German millionaire and horse breeder. While he gathered information in Cairo, Lotz began to succumb to his covert identity, living the high life, spending millions and even marrying a German woman while leaving his son and wife alone in Paris. In this striking, innovative documentary, his son, Oded Gur Arie, breaks 40 years of silence as he opens up and confronts the consequences of his father's dangerous life of secrets and deceit.
