Randy Simmons' dynamic drawings carry three themes: children and parenting, domestic violence, and relationships. Although each of them can be addressed separately at times, the boundaries of these subjects can overlap. Being a father to two boys ages 11 and 13 has inspired Simmons through being able to see the world through his children's eyes. Besides his children, Simmons also uses his wife, a domestic violence prosecutor, as a source of inspiration. In 2004, he began a series of drawings realistically depicting how women become the victims of domestic violence, physically and emotionally. While many of Simmons' paintings deal with issues head-on, some of the earlier work dealing with dating and relationships employs sarcasm in order to be viewed as more humorous. Especially in his charcoal drawings, Simmons creates drama through careful attention to lightness and darkness and, at times, through the climax of the event depicted or the end result. Currently, Simmons is an Assistant Professor of Art at West Kentucky Community and Technical College in Paducah, Kentucky.

Note: This exhibition is in the East Wing Gallery. A free opening reception will be held on March 27.
