    Nashville-based artist Susan Goshgarian McGrew is an avid painter of nature. Whether painting mountain laurels, bubbling streams or the reflections of trees, all of her paintings have amazing saturated colors, which demonstrate the vitality, movement and change present in natural settings. McGrew derives much of her inspiration through hikes around the Fiery Gizzard River in the Cumberland Plateau state park system. As she explores, she creates on-site watercolor and graphite studies that later transition into dynamic oil paintings. Water, often used as a metaphor for shaping or changing, plays a huge part in her paintings as another connection to the experience of human life. McGrew's paintings use abstraction as a means of breaking up the ordinary painterly landscape. Instead the viewer sees a more realistic version of being in the woods with objects fragmented by rays of sunlight or reflections off streams. The paintings leap to life through their bold colors and lines and create an exaggerated destination only reachable through memory - a memory of McGrew's, which she is kind enough to share.

    Note: This exhibition is in the Visual Arts Gallery. A free opening reception will be held on May 22.
