Deb Arter is a Maine-based artist who graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Arter confesses that she, like most of us, is a creature of habit. Habits or personal rituals include cooking meals, washing dishes and doing laundry, as well as traditional women's crafts such as weaving, sewing and crocheting. Arter uses all of these mundane activities as a way to make artwork in order to call attention to domestic labor or what she refers to as "invisible" labor. Her work employs themes of paradox, memory and power in a humorous but somewhat sarcastic manner. She uses a diversity of materials, such as bacon, soap and felt, to open a dialogue with the viewer about history, stereotypes, excess, waste and cliche roles. By using actions such as knitting in a contemporary manner, she is able to bridge the gap between old and new, blending the ideas of the present and the past.

Note: This exhibition is in the North Wing Gallery. A free opening reception will be held on May 22.
