The Broadway show that launched the career of Carol Burnett, Once Upon a Mattress is a magical musical based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. A devious queen devises impossible tests for potential brides for her drab son, but is foiled when a princess nicknamed Fred emerges from the swamps to win the kingdom's hearts. Burnett made her Broadway debut as Princess Winnifred in 1959 and appeared in three television adaptations. A 1997 revival featured Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) and Jane Krakowski (30 Rock, Ally McBeal).
