Dr. Joy Degruy (formerly Leary) is a national author/lecturer on Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing. Dr. Degruy is Assistant Professor at Portland State University with more than 20 years of experience in social work. Her presentation will examine the Theory of Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome which suggests that centuries of slavery followed by systemic racism and oppression have resulted in generations of adaptive behaviors, some positive and resilient; others detrimental and destructive. This presentation will help lay the groundwork for understanding how the past has influenced the present, and open up discussions on how we can begin to heal.
