Falling on Halloween this year, Historic Downtown Franklin’s Pumpkinfest is adding some new activities - including cemetery tours, a carnival and a street dance - to make Main Street’s annual fall festival even more fun. The street festival of Pumpkinfest is free and open to the public on Franklin’s Main Street from Second to Fifth Avenues. After 6:00pm, activities continue with the Avenue Bank Street Dance on Fourth Avenue North and an outdoor movie, “The Haunting,” on Third Avenue South. The street dance is 21-and-up; the movie is for all ages.

Activities of Pumpkinfest include: More than 60 vendors will be displaying hand-crafted items perfect for fall and the holidays. All Things Pumpkin area at Five Points; Franklin’s Sister City, Carleton Place, Canada, brings down the great pumpkin which will be on display in front of the Franklin Theatre with a chance to guess the weight. The Leiper’s Fork Carving Club will be carving pumpkins and displaying their work throughout the day on Fourth Avenue North. The People’s Church children’s area on Third Avenue South filled with free and fun activities for young children. A free outdoor Halloween movie from 7:00pm-9:00pm shown on Third Avenue South between City Hall and the Old County Courthouse. The movie is the 1963 version of “The Haunting” - a suspenseful black-and-white film without violence, language or anything that would rate a PG-13 rating by today’s standards. This is the original production of the well-known film.

The Franklin Tomorrow Chili Cook-off on Fourth Avenue South. Tickets to taste chili from 10 local organizations and restaurants will be available for $5 at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Main during the event. A beer/wine garden on Fourth Avenue South, capping off Pumpkinfest with the Avenue Bank Street Dance featuring popular local band the Soul Searchers from 7:30pm-10:00pm preceded by Stoned Soul Revival from 6:00pm-7:30pm. There is a $5 per person cover charge from 6:00pm-10:00pm. There will be Cemetery Tours on Halloween Night from 7:00pm-9:00pm. Participants will walk from tombstone to tombstone at the Historic Resthaven cemetery on North Margin Street, hearing about the people who are buried in the graves from costumed reenactors. Tickets are $15 per person for adults, $10 for children, but the activity is not recommended for children under 6. Tickets are available from www.franklinonfoot.com and at the Heritage Foundation. Participants should bring a flashlight and wear close-toe shoes.
