The conference examines the importance of cavalry and mounted warfare actions that occurred in Tennessee during the tumultuous period of the Civil War. Through lectures, walking tours, and discussion, the conference will focus on the varied aspects of the war, evaluate the cavalry leadership of both the Union and the Confederacy, and examine the powerful ways in which horse mounted soldiers shaped the outcome of the war. The conference will bring together various viewpoints on mounted warfare and its impact on Tennessee and the role of Belle Meade Plantation as the post-war home of Confederate cavalry General William Hicks Jackson. The conference also includes a special tour: In the middle of the storm: The Civil War at Belle Meade by Thomas Cartwright, noted local historian and former director of the Carter House in Franklin, Tennessee. Several prominent historians and scholars will participate in the conference:

Richard McMurry, PhD., independent scholar and author
Topic: Uncompromising Secessionist: James Knox Miller and the 8th Confederate Cavalry
Saturday Luncheon Speaker:
Brian McKnight, PhD., Angelo State University, San Angelo, Texas
Topic: Champ Ferguson: Tennessee Terror
Other Conference Presenters:
Myers Brown, author and curator of extension services at the Tennessee State Museum
Topic: Loyal Cavaliers: Tennessee's Unionist Cavalrymen
Greg Biggs, independent scholar and author
Topic: Turning the Tide: The Union Cavalry at Shelbyville
Dr. Lonnie Maness Ph.D., University of Tennessee at Martin (Emeritus)
Topic: Lightning Warfare, Forrest’s West Tennessee Raid, December 1862
Special Tour: “In the Middle of the Storm: The Civil War at Belle Meade” by Thomas Cartwright, noted local historian and former director of the Carter House in Franklin, Tennessee
In conjunction with the Civil War Cavalry Conference, the exhibition, Hoofbeats in the Heartland: Civil War Cavalry in Tennessee, will be on display. This traveling exhibition was organized by the Tennessee State Museum and funded in part by the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area to explore the development and impact of mounted warfare in Tennessee during the Civil War. The exhibition will be on display at Belle Meade Plantation March 27-April 20, 2009.

Tickets: Conference cost includes: Friday evening reception and keynote address. Saturday lunch, all speakers, Belle Meade tour, and book signing by guest authors. The registration fee is $65 for both days, $50 for teachers and military personnel (validation required) and for students (validation required).
