The Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, like in the Cumberlands, was fought by neighbors and guerillas, not just armies. The James Stewart movie becomes this stirring musical of valor and patriotism, of honor and conscience, war and peace. An American farm family struggles amid the national conflict that echoes yet today.
