April 20-June 14, 2009

This April, May, and June, the Belle Meade Mansion will be the setting for the 1894 wedding of Eunice Jackson and Albert Marks. Eunice was the eldest child of General and Selene Harding Jackson. She married Albert Marks, son of a former Governor, in June of 1894. Her wedding was a small family affair however society pages reported that the event was one of the most elegant of the 1894 spring season. The society columns describe in great detail how the ceremony took place, the gown the bride wore, and even the arrangements of flowers and food. These accounts allow the Belle Meade Plantation Curatorial department to recreate the scene just as it appeared in 1894.
On daily guided tours, visitors will learn how wedding customs in the 19th Century serve as the foundation for weddings today. The use of certain flowers at weddings, the serving of a big white iced cake, the reception, receiving lines, and the white gown were all popular Victorian traditions. Guests will also hear of some 19th Century wedding customs that are not at all common today such as elaborate trousseaus of clothing prepared for the bride in her new home, three types of wedding cake, and foods served at receptions like roasted squab and tongue sandwiches.
Guests will see the recreated 1894 ceremony in the parlor, the reception in the dining room, and antique wedding clothing in the bedrooms upstairs. Several wedding dresses and tuxedos are in the Belle Meade Plantation textile collections that were generously donated by Nashville families. A variety will be on display, some never seen by the public.
