The Cumberland County Playhouse, in Crossville, TN, reopens the perennial family gospel and Bluegrass musical, Smoke on the Mountain, sponsored by Cracker Barrel Old Country Store. The classic and popular production returns April 16th and continues through October 3rd. This marks the 16th consecutive season that the Sanders Family will grace the Playhouse stage in this down-home masterpiece by Connie Ray and Alan Bailey.

The year is 1938. It's Saturday night in Mount Pleasant, NC, and the Reverend Oglethorpe has invited the Sanders Family Singers to provide an upliftin' evening of singin' and witnessin'. The audience literally becomes the congregation. Two dozen traditional and original hymns, plus stories of witness from family members, form the very simple structure of the show. But the honesty, humor (sometimes unintentional!), and faith of this Southern mountain family and the church's young preacher, connect strongly with audiences of all ages and faiths, who find themselves part of a very special afternoon or evening. The Sanders Family features guitar and banjo-playing Tommy Hancock as Daddy Burl with Lauren Marshall (fiddle) returning as Mama Vera and Anne Staler again in the "signing" role of June Sanders. The production is directed by Daniel Black, with musical assistance from Playhouse resident musical director Ron Murphy.
