Songsmith and pianist Gordon Roque is a bruised butterfly. His songs flirt with grand operatic emotion, but they pull back before veering into sentimentality or melodrama. It's more than just hope. It's more than just loss. There is depth behind the simplicity of his spare words and austere arrangements. Listen. Listen again. There is grittiness here if you look for it...evidence of tough breaks, hard times, hunger, heartache, loneliness, joy, and an indefatigable spirit. If a great song is an emotion lived-in, Roque is a master of form. You might find yourself falling into his songs, making his words your own, and remembering.
