The seed for the idea for the 2,700-square-foot public garden was planted when country music legend Barbara Mandrell gave her namesake rose to friend and LifeWorks Foundation Trustee, Pat Bullard, who recognized it as a way to acknowledge the music and artists synonymous with Nashville and also to beautify Music City. In her research, she found that over three dozen roses were named for Nashville artists, songs or industry leaders. These include Minnie Pearl (1981), Barbara Mandrell (1990), Brenda Lee (Williams Variety 1991) and Pam Tillis (2003), but the “celebrity roses” had never before been housed together in one garden for the public to view.
On September 29, decades of entertainment and talent will be recognized, with roses and daylilies at the dedication of the Nashville Music Garden. Started by avid gardener and country music star Barbara Mandrell, the Nashville Music Garden honors icons such as Elvis, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, as well as famous authors, TV personalities, and places that have had a positive impact on Nashville's entertainment industry. Brenda Lee, Ray Walker of the Jordanaires, Manuel and the families of Loretta Lynn and Merle Kilgore are the latest additions to the ever-growing list of celebrities participating in the dedication of the Nashville Music Garden. The event will be emceed by long-standing country music television personality Ralph Emery. Recent Country Music Hall of Fame® inductee Barbara Mandrell and GRAMMY® award-winner Lynn Anderson will serve as celebrity hosts.
Among the celebrities already confirmed to attend are Patti Page, Donna Fargo, Little Jimmy Dickens, Jeff Cook of Alabama, Irlene Mandrell, Marty Raybon, Janice Wendell, Mandy Barnett, songwriters Jeffrey Steele, Shane Minor, Bart Allmand, Randy Thomas, Mac Gayden and Buzz Cason, and the families of songwriter Ben Peters, The Big Bopper, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, DeFord Bailey, Minnie Pearl and Jimi Hendrix. Officials from the State of Tennessee and Mayor Karl Dean will also be in attendance.
The garden is funded by LifeWorks Foundation and is supported by MetroParks, the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum, the Hilton Downtown Nashville and the Nashville Rose Society.
