Enjoy an enchanting evening of theatre under the stars at The Nashville Shakespeare Festival's 22nd Annual FREE Shakespeare in Centennial Park featuring The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) is a hysterical exploration of the Bard’s great works performed by three frantic men as they attempt to perform all 37 of the plays in 90 minutes. This classic work is sheer delight, but leaves the audience with a greater appreciation for the fun everybody can have with what is usually thought of as the “stuffy” poetry of the world’s greatest playwright.

For 22 years the Nashville Shakespeare Festival has entertained and educated the Mid-South community with its energetic and family friendly productions and innovative educational outreach.       The cast's enthusiasm and pop culture references weren't enough to make up for the fact that most of the humor was crude at best. The production may have improved after the first 20 minutes-- my experiences with past SITP productions have been overwhelmingly positive-- but I was too surprised and disappointed this time to wait around and see.       Undoubtedly talented actors saddled with a script lacking in part in the wit and brilliance of Shakespeare. While the segment on Hamlet was excellent with rare exception, there are many elements of the remaining production common to 13 year old boyish base humor- unnessarily crass, crude and in some places vile. The actors did a good job interacting with the audience and this comedic show was entertaining in parts. While aspects of Shakespeare's works were covered well, others were brushed aside, treated extremely briefly, or highly convuluted. The king's game scene was heartily enjoyed. This performance would not be what would be considered family viewing without serious revision. I imagine the coperate donors would have an earful, if parents were inclined to voice their concerns.
