The Rymer Gallery would like to cordially invite you to the opening of Posterna, an unveiling of the newest paintings from Julia Martin. A native Nashvillian, Martin has already created quite a stir in the art community. She has garnered quite a following, which has helped establish her as one of the new, young, rising talents to watch. Martin has spent months creating a new body of work for this show, which The Rymer Gallery feels is her best work to date.

The figures and scenes that Martin creates hum with otherworldly intrigue. Her masterful use of oil on canvas portrays the complexities of human emotion and experience with an edge. Stylistically, Martin’s works fall somewhere between the Dutch Master’s and the contemporary low-brow, blue chip, paintings of Mark Ryden. Martin’s training at the School of Visual Art in New York and Savannah allowed her to hone her skills as an accomplished portraitist. Upon returning to Nashville, she turned inward to create new and voyeuristic images that are mysterious and at once, profound. Her source material is deeply personal, sometimes humorous, and always original.

The Rymer Gallery will also be hosting a small series of drawings in the mezzanine gallery by local emerging artist David Hellams. Hellams’ drawings are incredibly realistic narratives with complex symbolism.

Closing Reception: Saturday, October 3, 6:00pm-9:00pm as part of the First Saturday Downtown Gallery Crawl.
