8th Annual Humanities Symposium: 'Landscape and National Identities'
September 15, 2009
Add Review/Comment
This illustrated talk will trace the use of particular landscapes as metonyms for national identity: Blake's "green and pleasant land" of England, the "forty shades of green" of Ireland, the "amber waves of grain" of the provocativelynamed American "heartland." We will examine patriotic songs, landscape poetry, landscape painting and the iconographic meanings of Monument Valley, used in Westerns to symbolize the heroic American character.
This event is part of Belmont University's Eighth Annual Humanities Symposium, which this year is centered on the concept Nature and the Human Spirit. Be sure to check out the long program schedule and short program schedule.
