The Commodore was the tenth richest man in history at the time of his death. The family was the most mansion-building family in American history. In this class, the Vanderbilt family history, construction history and spending will be examined. Their accomplishments include building the largest house in America, controlling Blenheim Castle and buying a husband and title for a daughter for $2.5 million. Among the historic firsts in the family: the first woman to cut her waist-length hair, the first woman to ride a bicycle, first society woman to divorce and the first society woman to remarry a divorced man.
