Celebrate Museum Day by enjoying a free matinee of the Smithsonian Channel’s new documentary, Soul of a People, hosted by the Tennessee State Museum Foundation, in collaboration with the Tennessee Film, Entertainment & Music Commission, with a short lecture by Will Akers, who teaches screenwriting and filmmaking at Vanderbilt.

This film explores the Federal Writers Project, one of four arts programs developed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt under the Works Progress Administration (WPA). This public assistance program, one of the Great Depression’s most controversial, is currently celebrating its 75th anniversary. Thousands of out-of-work writers in the 1930s including Saul Bellow, John Cheever, and Richard Wright were employed by the WPA.
