After After Hours, Nashville's first monthly city-wide art event, seeks to elevate awareness and support for the visual arts in Nashville. On the first Thursday of each month participating galleries and museums will be opening and previewing new shows and presenting art talks with insightful discussions. Click here for a NAAD gallery map.
This month's highlights include: Auld Alliance Gallery (Westgate Center, Hwy 100) will feature a still life painting demonstration by Kim Barrick, founder of The Chestnut Group, “Plein Air Painters for the Land.” Music will be provided by singer/songwriter Kirstie Lane. Refreshments will be served; Cumberland Gallery (Green Hills) welcomes artist Barry Buxkamper who will speak about his work at 7pm. His works have been probing, witty explorations of varied themes executed with unbridled skill and imagination. In this show, most of his works deal with the process of aging (his in particular), in both a serious and playful manner. Finer Things Gallery (near Fairgrounds) presents Defeated Creek, Tennessee artist Linda Johnson’s latest cast of ceramic characters; Frist Center for the Visual Arts (downtown) will present a free lecture “Thomas Hart Benton: An Epic Life,” conducted by Henry Adams, author of “Thomas Hart Benton:An American Original.” In addition, Frist will offer free music in the main lobby (admission fee to the galleries for non-members); Gallery One (Belle Meade Galleria) will be showing new works by gallery artists, including abstract paintings of new gallery artist Patty Oblack; Gallery Simin (Germantown) showcases the international photography of Simin Soroush; LeQuire Gallery (near Sylvan Park) invites guests to tour the gallery’s current exhibit, New Figurative Artists with host Alan LeQuire. At 6:00pm, LeQuire comments on the work, the artists, and the concept. Artists include Juliette Aristides, Maggie Rose, Murat Kaboulov, Joshua Bronaugh, Jonathan Matthews, and Marti Jones Dixon; Local Color (on Broadway) presents “Small Treasures,” an annual event featuring small works from over 30 local and regional artists. These are items that will fit nicely under any tree. Take home two, they’re small!
Also, Richland Fine Art (Green Hills) exhibits a show featuring new landscapes of three popular area painters, Roger Dale Brown, Paula Frisbe, and Dawn Whitelaw; Rymer Gallery (downtown) kicks off November Art After Hours with Urban Legends: Portland’s Gabriel Mark exhibits a new collection of painting, with additional works by renowned Chicago artist Catherine Forster; Parthenon, East Gallery (Centennial Park) presents the new exhibition “The Fiery Gizzard Series: Paintings by Susan Goshgarian McGrew. She focuses her work on the Fiery Gizzard River area, which is part of the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee; The Arts Company (downtown) will exhibit the remaining vintage sketches from the estate of Ernest Hamlin Baker, the TIME cover artist in the 1920s-1940s; Tinney Contemporary (downtown) previews its new exhibition “Intimate Decade - a diverse exploration of human contact from birth to death” featuring photographs by David Teplica; Zeitgeist (Hillsboro Village) presents Lars Strandh’s new works on linen and open studio/works on paper including artists Patrick DeGuira, Brady Haston, Hans Schmitt-Matzen, and Manuel Zeitlin. Meet the artists during Art After Hours.
