Antichrist

Inarguably the most controversial film of the year, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that Antichrist does earn this hype, and then some…Long accused of being mysoginist, filmmaker Lars von Trier ups the ante by creating a scenario of a couple in grief (Willem Defoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, both in remarkable performances) who literally tear one another, and themselves, apart. Conceived during a period of depression, the viewer wonders if this couple doesn’t represent the warring factions of von Trier’s id and super-ego. If nothing else, Lars von Trier’s most personal film succeeds in bringing a singular vision of staggering beauty and harrowing grief together while simultaneously out-shocking and trivializing the likes of torture films like Saw and Hostel. It is most likely that you have never encountered anything quite like Antichrist, whose unquestionably inspired imagery of the first two acts are, ahem, cut to pieces in its uncompromisingly brutal third act. Proceed with utmost caution, and consider asking the staff exactly when to look away. Dir. Lars von Trier, Germany/Denmark, 2009, 109min, 35mm.
Please note: Due to images of graphic sexuality, brutality, and combinations thereof, no one under 18 will be admitted.
