What Lies Beneath: Paintings by John Kingerlee

What lies beneath? Many of renowned artist John Kingerlee's paintings are built of layers and layers of paint applied with a palette knife or trowel. This repetitive process continues for months, sometimes years, leaving a history of the process in the painting. As the artist looks out his studio window, he sees the rugged and barren Beara landscape of Ireland as it reaches to the sea; low brush and outcroppings of rock lead to the Atlantic Ocean. The layers of paint he applies take on the contours of the landscape and his feelings about the space he occupies -- abstract, but rich with implied and applied color. Kingerlee also spends three months each year painting in Fez, Morocco, where he immerses himself in the urban environment, inspired by its graffiti and advertising, which pushes him in a different direction from the landscapes of his Irish home.

Kingerlee is a self-taught English artist who has been painting most of the seven decades of his life. This American tour of his paintings began two years ago, curated by the late New York critic William Zimmer. The Parthenon's East Gallery will exhibit thirty-nine paintings and collages. Senior Editor of Art in America Richard Vine will give a lecture titled John Kingerlee: By Art Alone on December 8 at 7:00pm as part of the 2009-2010 Parthenon Symposia Series. Mr. Vine states that "Kingerlee began making paintings, drawings, and collages in a typical Outsider style; yet, over time, he evolved, [eventually] creating works that converse with those of Malevich, Giacometti, Braque, Klee, Schwitters, Rothko, and Twombly." The lecture is free to the public, but requires reservations, which can be made by calling (615) 862-8431. The exhibit, which was organized by Katharine Carter & Associates, will be on view through February 6, 2010.
