January 21-March 6, 2010
Add Review/Comment
This installation consists of 49 glass bottles, each representing 50 liters. Each bottle stands for the amount of water used per person per day in each country. There will be small houses made of ice which will melt each day and represent the domestic use of water. Basic Water Requirements (BWR) refers to domestic water usage per person per day and includes water for drinking, human hygiene, sanitation services and food preparation. It has been established that the BWR per person is 50 liters of water each day for basic human needs. Unfortunately 20% of the world's population only uses around 5 liters each day. More than 1 billion people do not have access to clean drinking water and do not have access to the BWR of 50 liters per day.
Gregg Schlanger is a Professor of Art at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. He received his BFA from Boise State University and his MFA from Northern Illinois University. Gregg’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including a community public art commission for the City of Memphis, a community project for the City of Providence, Rhode Island, a commission for the public library in Owensboro, Kentucky and exhibits in Berlin, Erfurt, Potsdam and Jena, Germany. In addition Gregg has exhibited his work in Illinois, Iowa, Nevada, California, North Carolina, Arkansas, Idaho and Virginia. He has received many awards including Sponsorship by the New York Foundation for the Arts, Israel-Tennessee Visual Artist Exchange Project Fellowship, USIA Arts America Grant and New Forms Regional Initiative Grant from the NEA. Gregg works primarily in installations and community public art. He is interested in exploring through his projects the potential of creating a better “sense of place” (leading to a respect for that place and the environment). Gregg believes this can happen through community involvement and the educational aspects that occur dealing with the various concepts of his work.
Note: This exhibition is in the Visual Arts Gallery. A free lecture followed by an opening reception will be held on January 21 from 5:00pm to 7:30pm.
