In the words of art critic Lori Waxman, “If drawing traditionally provides an intimate medium through which to sketch, record, and transmit both the loosest and most precise of figurative detail, Stewart-Sanabria's practice turns that tradition on its penciled head. Life-size and larger- than-life-size, her charcoal on birch plywood drawings dwarf the viewer, existing as uncanny representations of average folks in real space”.

Denise Stewart-Sanabria was born in Massachusetts and received her BFA in Painting from The University of Massachusetts/Amherst. She has lived in Knoxville since 1986. She has received over 20 awards received during a five-year period from both curators and directors from the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Knoxville Museum of Art, The Hunter Museum of Art in Chattanooga, and the National Portrait Gallery. Recent exhibits include “Skeletons in Closets” at the Tennessee Art Commission Gallery, Cumberland Gallery’s “Annual Perennial”, and Estel Gallery’s “Line”, an international exhibit of drawing, all in Nashville,
the 2nd Tennessee Biennial at the Clarksville Custom House Museum, “2008 Biennale: Contemporary American Realism”, at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art in Indiana, and Positive/Negative, the annual national juried show at ETSU’s Slocumb Gallery, juried in 2008 by Antoine Guerrero, Director of Exhibitions, PS1 Contemporary Art Center, NY. Sanabria’s work will be seen this fall at the William King Museum’s “From These Hills 2009: Contemporary Art in the Appalachian Highlands” in Abingdon, VA.

Note: This exhibition is in the East Wing Gallery. A free lecture followed by an opening reception will be held on January 21 from 5:00pm to 7:30pm.
