In celebration of Black History Month the traditional historic space of Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Nashville will be transformed by the raw power of James Weldon Johnson's African-American folk sermons in Ted Swindley's new dramatization of "God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse," originally written in 1927. The historic poetry will be staged in a colorful and unusual theatrical presentaiton with original music including jazz and new age selections, along with traditional gospel music and dance. Swindley (ALWAYS...PATSY CLINE)and Shawn Whitsell, artistic director of THE DESTINY THEATRE EXPERIENCE, direct a cast including Jacqueline Springfield, Rodrikus Springfield, David Chattam and Tamiko Robinson, and featuring the Rev. Dolores Nicholson, Deacon at Christ Church Cathedral in a cameo appearance. Composer Rolin Mains provides original music and directs an instrumental ensemble. Dr. Jane Warren of the Belmont School of Music directs the gospel ensemble. This event is part of the Sacred Space for the City Arts Series and is co-sponsored by Christ Church Cathedral Civic Committee and Friends of the Cathedral.
