The Conservancy for the Parthenon and Centennial Parks presents the 2010 Parthenon Saturday Series, a four-week lecture series entitled The Iliad & The Odyssey: Still Relevant After 3,000 Years.

“Why should modern readers spend time on these ancient works? …these epics have survived because they have continued to speak to readers throughout the ages…They are much more than merely narratives about war (the Iliad) or adventure and homecoming (the Odyssey). They both look deep into the heart of what it means to be human…..We find them compelling in part because so much of our later literary tradition derives ultimately from them….apart from these epics, only the Bible has exercised so profound an influence on later Western culture.”
-- Elizabeth Vandiver, Professor of Classics, Whitman College

Don’t miss this opportunity to have these two great classics come alive for you!

Spend the first two weeks of February on the Iliad with Dr. Timothy Winters, Professor of Classical Languages and Literature at Austin Peay State University. Dr. Winters is a past Saturday Series teacher and Parthenon Symposium lecturer. He usually spends his summers in Greece, leading student groups and doing research on the topography and archaeology of ancient Salamis.

February 6: Anger, Pride and the Human Condition in Homer’s Iliad
February 13: The Final Year of the Trojan War

Spend the final two weeks studying the Odyssey with Dr. Susan Wiltshire, retired Professor of Classical Studies at Vanderbilt University. In addition to non-fiction, Dr. Wiltshire’s published works include two books of poetry. She is a past Saturday Series teacher and Parthenon Symposium Lecturer.

February 20: The Odyssey: More than Adventure
February 27: The Odyssey: An Unusual Homecoming
