SunTrust Classical Series presents Elgar & Bach featuring Nashville Symphony, Giancarlo Guerrero, conductor, and Steven Isserlis, cello.

    John Tavener - Popule Meus
Dvorák - Serenade for Winds in D minor, Op. 44
Elgar - Concerto for Cello in E minor, Op. 85
Bach - Suite for Orchestra No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068

With its carefully considered blend of moods, tempos and timbres, Bach’s Suite for Orchestra No. 3 contains some of the liveliest and most entertaining music of the composer’s long and prolific career. The piece’s second movement contains one of his most recognizable melodies, later popularized as Air on a G String. Written in the waning days of World War I, Elgar’s Cello Concerto is a reflective, autumnal piece in which a mood of subdued melancholy is enlivened by moments of playfulness and energy. It’s perfectly matched in this program with a new cello concerto by fellow British composer Sir John Tavener, whose work tackles profound spiritual questions.
