SunTrust Classical Series presents Rachmaninoff & Bruckner featuring Nashville Symphony, Giancarlo Guerrero, conductor, and Kirill Gerstein, piano.
Rachmaninoff - Concerto for Piano No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18
Bruckner - Symphony No. 3 in D minor "Wagner Symphony"
In his monumental Third Symphony, which he dedicated to Richard Wagner, Anton Bruckner sought to convey both the joys and the sorrows of life. An ideal showpiece for the acoustical splendor of Laura Turner Concert Hall, the work owes a debt not just to the music of Wagner, but also to the exultant affirmation of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is a high point in the composer’s career, full of impressive acrobatics at the keyboard and supremely memorable melodies. The music is so memorable, in fact, that it has inspired several popular songs, including Frank Sinatra’s “Full Moon and Empty Arms” and Eric Carmen’s “All By Myself.
