Genealogy expert and author John F. Baker Jr. will speak at Scarritt-Bennett Center about his groundbreaking work in African-American and American history. A descendant of Wessyngton slaves and a native of Springfield, Tennessee, Baker will discuss his recently published book, The Washingtons of Wessyngton Plantation: Stories of My Family's Journey to Freedom. Baker's book gives fresh insight into the institution of slavery and its ongoing legacy today. Through his work, Baker brings to life 250 years of history gleaned from 11,200 archived documents and the fleeting stories and memories of descendents of Wessyngton slaves. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required. To RSVP, call (615) 340-7557, e-mail aelliot@scarrittbennett.org, or visit www.scarrittbennett.org.
