The Nashville Jazz Workshop and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts announce the next installment of the popular jazz performance and education series, Jazz on the Move. Each program in the series focuses on a significant jazz style, artist or period in jazz history, and combines performance and education.

This series is made possible by an Arts Builds Communities (ABC) grant from the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission in cooperation with the Tennessee Arts Commission.

Sunday, June 27 we present a program originally scheduled for May 2 but cancelled due to the flood. The program is especially for children and their families, and celebrates the music of American Jazz master Duke Ellington through a visit to "Ellingtown." This puppet show, produced by the Nashville Public Library in collaboration with the Nashville Jazz Workshop, takes children on an imaginative journey through classic jazz. Children will hear such Ellington classics as "Cottontail," "Take the 'A' Train", and "C-Jam Blues," presented with fanciful puppets and spectacular scenery, with Duke Ellington as their tour guide.

The puppet program was designed and produced by the Nashville Public Library's acclaimed Wishing Chair Productions, led by Brian Hull who wrote the story and designed the puppets and scenery. The music consists of authentic Duke Ellington classics, performed by NJW Director Lori Mechem (piano) with Roger Spencer (bass), Chris Brown (drums), Denis Solee (saxophone), and George Tidwell (trumpet). The program was produced through grants from the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and the Tennessee Arts Commission.

"Ellingtown" has been performed at the Library and at preschools and child care centers all over Nashville, and always gets an enthusiastic audience response. This is another chance for the general public to experience this combination of great music and master puppetry.
