Sarah studied history at Cambridge University and while writing this novel, spent time researching and living in a convent in Ferrara, Italy. The result is the incredible story about 16th-century Catholic Europe when the price of wedding dowries had risen so sharply that most noble families could not afford to marry off more than one daughter. The remaining young women were dispatched -- for a much lesser price -- to convents. Historians estimate that up to half of all noblewomen became nuns – and not all of them went willingly.
