SACRED HEARTS is a suspenseful, dramatic story about a 16-year-old girl who has just been admitted to a convent against her will. It is at once a haunting story about lost love, the complicated interplay of politics, society, and religion and a group of women who empower each other and find strategies to maneuver within a restrictive system imposed by the Counter Reformation. Sarah brings this time period to life with writing that is informed, unsentimental, and captivating.

Sarah Dunant, the New York Times bestselling author of The Birth of Venus and In the Company of the Courtesan is coming to your city to promote the paperback edition of the third novel in her Renaissance trilogy SACRED HEARTS (Random House; On Sale: April 13). Each of the books in Sarah’s trilogy presents a picture of what life would be like for an ordinary woman during that time. Sarah studied history at Cambridge University and while writing this novel, spent time researching and living in a convent in Ferrara, Italy. The result is the incredible story about 16th-century Catholic Europe when the price of wedding dowries had risen so sharply that most noble families could not afford to marry off more than one daughter. The remaining young women were dispatched -- for a much lesser price -- to convents. Historians estimate that up to half of all noblewomen became nuns – and not all of them went willingly.
