The Rymer Gallery’s upcoming show, Southern Organic, will feature the works of three southern artists: Michael Brown, Jonathan Ferrara, and Erin Anfinson.
Michael Brown, a professor of painting at Savannah College of Art and Design’s Atlanta campus, creates fantastical paintings of animals and flowers that exist somewhere between Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland and a Southern Gothic picture book. Brown credits his inspiration to “Greek mythology; cultural, economic, and social Eugenics; contemporary imperialism; the Oedipus complex; and his search for the resemblance of reason in the futility of human existence.” In addition to his presence in Nashville and Atlanta, Brown has been exhibited nationally and internationally in New Orleans, New York, California, Tel Aviv, and London.
Jonathan Ferrara is a New Orleans artist and gallery owner whose work has been exhibited in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Miami, New York, Wisconsin, and internationally in Hungary. As part of several prominent collections, Ferrara describes his work as political and textural with direct intention of replicating the very process of his subject rather than provoking translation. Ferrara’s work was recently featured in Lord & Taylor’s Manhattan flagship store windows on Fifth Avenue for Kaleidoscope Katrina, an exhibition of New Orleans artists.
Erin Anfinson rounds out this group show with her new series Collapse based on Colony Collapse Disorder in honeybee populations. Anfinson’s encaustic drawings are inspired by nineteenth century illustrations of flukes and other parasitic creatures. Originally from Iowa, Anfinson relocated to Nashville from Connecticut after receiving her MFA from The University of Connecticut. Anfinson’s work has been published in New American Paintings (No. 64). She is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Middle Tennessee State University and has exhibited both regionally and nationally.
