The Center for the Arts presents “Plane, Line, and Pattern: 3 Geometries,” featuring the work of artists Jeremy Braden, David Person, and Sundy Wright, curated by Christine Peterson. Each of the artists uses a distinct style and method to approach the non-objective idea of shape and line in space. With dynamic planes of bright color, detailed repetitions of intricate symbols, and fine, colorful line work, this exhibit celebrates the geometric in an exciting way.

Artist Sundy Wright interprets the intricate shapes of the alphabet by means of detailed wood-block prints. For “3 Geometries,” Wright will present a series of colorful prints made from woodcuts she carves herself. Patterns are formed from the negative and positive space created when letters are repeated in abstract, organic arrangements.

David Person’s work balances between painting and sculpture, and comprises bold statements in shape and color. Assemblages of wood, often made from found scraps, are painted in swaths of solid color. Attention is drawn to geometry when dynamically overlapping planes of color create new shapes in the assembled form.

Jeremy Braden, of Knoxville, Tennessee, works with traditional media such as ink on paper to create detailed studies in line. His well-crafted drawings resemble the outlines of imagined landscapes. Parallel lines in rich, but subdued colors stretch to the horizon, upward to the sky, or down into the cavernous earth. Gouache is sometimes used as well, heightening contrasts and the emotion of the work.
