Sometimes what we see is not what we get; knowledge of the world is limited, or at least dictated, by appearances. Coté’s artwork positions the world in a way that relocates the viewer and persuades them to question of what things are and how things work. This sculpture-based installation incorporates a Geodesic dome, a paper tent, a gilded woodpile, and a lighting element to throw shadows, all of which allow the viewer to create their own narrative as they wander through the space.

As a former explorer, frustrated architect, and aspiring social examiner, Derek Coté studied at Virginia Commonwealth University and Washington University where he received his MFA and BFA. He has exhibited nationally and internationally including exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Tacoma Art Museum, Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, SPACES Gallery in Cleveland, Exit Art and Roebling Hall in New York City, Marmara University in Istanbul, and Artwave Radio in Athens, Greece. In addition Derek was included in the 2007 Young Sculptors Competition at Miami University in Ohio, received a professional Artist Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and was an Artist-in-Residence at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He currently teaches at Watkins College of Art&Design.

This exhibition is held in the Visual Arts Gallery.
