Jason LaFerrera The Atlas is Pain
July 15-August 26, 2010
Add Review/Comment
Jason LaFerrera finds the textures and contours of old maps fascinating, even the tattered and stained parts. In this series, he digitally manipulates cartographic materials to create fauna, mostly birds, in poses reminiscent of field guides from a similarly early era of publication. Jason dissects the outlines of the animals, whittling out their curves from their form and then recreating the beasts from the antique pages, piece by piece. The patterns of forests and shores often become an animal's feathers or fur, while the rings of topography often trace out wings or antlers.
Jason LaFerrera grew up in Richmond, VA where he began his career as a music producer and recording engineer working with such acts as Avail, the Comas, VCR, Ultradolphins, and Snack Truck. He performed in the outfit Gregor Samsa, playing the bass guitar and synthesizer, and also producing their sophomore album 55:12. In 2006, Jason moved to Marrakech, Morocco to teach mathematics at the American School of Marrakech, where he worked until 2009. Currently, he is based in New York City, where he continues his studies in mathematics at Columbia University.
This exhibition is held in the North Wing Gallery.
