When he was studying at SCAD, Charles decided he wanted to combine his sketches with his paintings. After cutting and pasting paper to his canvases, he decided that paper was a medium that he needed to explore further. He then stumbled upon the Bazzil
scrapbooking paper he uses today, and his work started physically growing very quickly. Charles now uses paper to act as his brush, paint and canvas; he layers paper to build forms that look both organic and mechanical. When talking about his medium, he says “I use paper to create a world of fiction that challenges the viewer to suspend disbelief and venture into my fabricated reality.”

Charles has exhibited regionally and nationally in Tennessee, Georgia, New York, Illinois, Washington D.C., Texas and California. He has also shown internationally in France. Some of Charles’ recent accomplishments include a solo exhibition at Galerie EVOLUTION-Pierre Cardin in Paris, France, a completed painting assistantship with Joe Amrhein, and work acquired by fashion designer Pierre Cardin. He also recently sold work to the permanent collection at SCAD’s Hong Kong campus, which will open in the fall of 2010.
