John Guider was a professional commercial photographer in Nashville for many years. He then made the decision to cut his ties to the corporate world and pursue his own dreams and passion for photography. The River Inside follows Guider’s journey as he travels along the Cumberland River and through the mighty Mississippi River, all the way down to New Orleans.

It all started with a humble canoe in Guider’s backyard, and a small creek that emptied into the Cumberland. And soon it turned into journey of the exploration of life along the river-ways. During his travels, Guider captured moments of beauty and intrigue with his camera, and documented his observations of the interactions between man and nature in his journal. The photographs from this wondrous journey are currently on display here at the Customs House Museum. The book, The River Inside, which includes Guider’s journal entries and images of his work, can also be purchased at the Seasons Gift Shop.

The River Inside is organized by the Tennessee State Museum, Nashville, Tennessee, and presented in conjunction with the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, Dubuque, Iowa. Initial support for the exhibition was provided by the Ingram Barge Company. The companion book is published by FRP Books, Nashville, with editorial and design assistance from McNeely Pigott & Fox.

Helpful Information: Children under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times and in all areas of the Museum. Free parking for Museum visitors is available behind the Museum at the top of the hill off South Second Street.
